Chapter Eight

Clean and dressed once again, they sat at a table in the galley finishing off their meal. The food was fresh since he’d restocked on Oasis. Flat bread and meat for sandwiches. He devoured three before he paused. He’d worked up an appetite.

Cerena sat across from him, elbows resting on the table, an empty plate in front of her. “You want more?” He motioned to the counter. “Help yourself.”

“I’m good.” She patted her flat stomach. She looked relaxed, her brown eyes soft, her burnished gold hair tousled.

“You certainly are,” he replied. His brothers would bust a gut if they could see him now, teasing a woman while sharing a meal.

A blush actually spread across her face, and she glanced aside. As much fun as this was, it was time to get down to business.

A low beep sounded. Flynn didn’t recognize it. Cerena paled.

“What is it?” he demanded.

“Communicator Ian gave me.” She dug the small device out of a hidden pocket in her vest. “I have to answer it.”

“Do it.”

Nodding, she angled her body away from him. “I want to talk to Nix?”

“You don’t make demands,” a male replied. Flynn’s eyes narrowed as he listened intently, memorizing that voice. “Is the job done?” Reader asked.

“Not yet. Flynn Marks isn’t an easy man to kill.” She sounded so disgruntled, he almost smiled.

“Not easy, but you’re a woman. Men like him have a weakness for women. Although maybe you’re too manly for his tastes. From what I remember, you’re big and sturdy. And you’ve been a bouncer all these years.” He made a tsking sound. “Not exactly a good role model for my son.”

Flynn wished Reader was in front of him. He’d break the other man in half for the insult to Cerena. As he watched, the color bled from her face. She hunched her shoulders, as though trying to make herself smaller. He didn’t like it. Not one bit.

“A son you never wanted,” she reminded him.

Flynn shifted in his chair, trying to get her attention without making any noise. When she glanced in his direction, he mouthed, “Keep him talking.” He’d already pulled his communication device out of his pocket and sent Kal a message. If anyone could track the message from Cerena’s device it would be his younger brother.

Once again, he wished Kal was here, but he was done putting his family in danger.

“I want to talk to Nix.”

“You need to give me something in return,” Reader told her. “Or I might decide to leave Nix on Antara. They like pretty young boys on that planet.”

“You leave my son on Antara and I will hunt you down, cut your balls off, and feed them to you.”

Flynn’s balls tightened, even though the threat wasn’t directed at him.

“Spend that fury on finding Flynn Marks.”

“I know where he is,” she told Reader.

Kal messaged Flynn back, telling him what to do. Flynn’s fingers were clumsy, but he worked as quickly as he could. This could be the break they needed.

“Then get this done and you can have the boy back.
